RE: The Future of the Champ Class?

I will agree with tp176 on the ignition, it is an area that is hard to develop properly on the dyno without real time timing curve changes

RE: The Future of the Champ Class?

I think Jerry is spot on...the 440 engine formula is solid, if parts become a problem, there are a ton of aftermarket folks who would be happy to build cylinders, heads, pistons ect.
Going to a stock engine with a single pipe would ruin the technical side of the sport which has its own following.

RE: 2009 Champ 440 Questions

You don't need a rule to have a consensus among racers....lets all agree to run the dual tail light in champ and open...lets not wait to be regulated...lets regulate our selves

RE: champ motor

I have a Gates poly-chain on my super-flow reduction drive, its seen over 200hp and 10700rpm on the primary shaft...the limiting factors are heat and BELT rpm, the longer the belt is the more power you can run thru the same belt...Gates has a cool computer program to calculate the redrives load cycle and gives you a belt that will work.
I have often thought of running twin belts(one on each side of the tunnel)to be able to run a narrower belt of shorter length

RE: Everyone's Thoughts on Class Proposals 2011 and Beyond

MIRA still has a strong group of stock racers, Last year at Eagle River Joel Diamond, Troy Dewald, Jeff Leunberger and Jim kurts all raced in Pro-stock...Mitch Diamond, Kris Eichenberg among others raced in semi-pro stock....on any given weekend in MIRA we have 10-20 stockers in some of the classes,
I am personally in full support of these stock rule changes, there will be some issues that come along with the changes but nothing that cant be resolved, however I don't see MIRA doing anything different next year as our membership has already voted on the classes we will be running in 2009.
MIRA is committed to the Super Stock platform thru 2010 as it premier class in pro enduro, will this new stock structure do away with Super Stock?

RE: Everyone's Thoughts on Class Proposals 2011 and Beyond

As far as the long vs short skis, most of the teams run a longer ski late in the enduro races, some ran it the whole race...works better on a trashy track...there is an issue with racers chopping across the long skis in an enduro with 25-30 sleds in a rolling start all bunched up.

RE: Everyone's Thoughts on Class Proposals 2011 and Beyond

Going to a 600 stock engine with pipes for the champ shouldn't be viewed as a cost saving tool, only a speed regulating device....the racers will still spend thousands for a stock engine like they will for a mod. Its the speed that has got people looking into different engine formulas.
I wouldn't change a lot in champ, if the engine supply dries up then consider the options...as for changing to 500cc, over in MI, some of the engines I see on my dyno are for summer dirt cars that use 500cc sno-mo engine in full mod....with twin pipes and 38mm carbs they are making 130-133hp!
If change is needed, go to a 340cc 2-stroke/500cc 4-stroke engine formula and use the bottom end of a stock engine, let the aftermarket guys make 340cc top end...it will keep the speeds down and involve the aftermarket people. keep the factory looking hoods to help identify with the consumers sleds.

RE: Eagle River Meeting Proposals

I will say one thing about the direction Todd want to go...it is without question the right thing for oval racing. MIRA started moving in this direction last year by CUTTING classes that did not meet some basic functions
1) the class had to have value with respect to moving a racer from a novice to a pro.
2) The class had to have value with respect to the Fans...It has to be entertaining to watch.
3) The class needed to be easily recognized from the GRANDSTAND. there is nothing worse than a race fan that doesn't know what class is out on the ICE...you have to be able to recognize the class by sound or visually
If the class did not meet at least two of these points, it got eliminated.
MIRA probably races more stockers than any other circuit, we have Super Stock and stock as our pro and semi-pro enduro classes with a few changes to suit the long distance racing. we have a mix of stock sleds racing, some sno-x, some trail...the trail sleds are easier to get to oval status, they are able to race in OEM trim without alot of changes. There are a couple of teams that race the MIRA enduro(300-500 laps on a 1/2 mile)with 98% stock sleds...they are NOT the snow-x sleds but the trail sleds that any one can buy, the only issue seems to be the front spindle....the spindles cant take the pounding, they are bending sideways in some cases...other than that they seem to handle good.
As for the Wahl and houle components, sell them to the limited 500 guys, its perfect for what they need.

MIRA adds F-500 & 500 limited

MIRA has added F-500 and 500-limited to its sprint line-up for 08-09...the f-500 class will be for the semi-pro racers, 500-limited will be a blended class(semi-pro and pro racers) until we have enough to run them separate.
We are also adding Vintage racing to our show...details TBA.

Please clarify if you could Todd...this oval SERIES as you say, is this another sanctioning body or is USSA and WSA involved in this NEW SERIES.

RE: WISH LIST... "New Champ Rules"

Our champ class is growing, not by leaps and bounds, but growth none the less. We don't seem to have an identity problem with the champ name, but we don't have the history of F1 like you do out east...maybe for EPT, F1 might be what you need there.
What ever is done to this class needs to be thought out carefully, even a name change...the less we change the better it is for the stability of the class...the current formula seems to working fairly good at the moment, all changes need to have merit and purpose. all pointing to more involment in champ from racers and fans both.

RE: WISH LIST... "New Champ Rules"

How are you going to verify that the sleds are using 93 oct at the track and where would you get the fuel in the winter months when all northern fuel is blended with alk....is there some equipment out there that can do that instantly...if not, there is no way you can regulate that rule...you can however, regulate lower compression and minimum squish which is doing the same thing from a performance standpoint.

RE: WISH LIST... "New Champ Rules"

I think keeping the engine formula the same except for a few changes is the way to go....keep the mod 440 with some type of programmable ignition, This would help teams who are not connected at the hip with the factory box programmers, eliminate the use of titanium anywhere on the sled...and the use of carbon fiber on any structural component
Get away from these antique 34mm round slide and let us run the 34mm peanut carbs that came with engines...the engines wouldn't be as fussy to tune, and they are everywhere...cheep
If the movement is to the 600 engine, let them be mods with twin pipes, but make them run low compression{6.8ccr) with a minimum squish requirement{.060)again easier to tech...34mm flat slides(peanut)
If you need to slow them down...reduce the length of carbide they are allowed to run and limit the number of studs they can have(hooker and chisels)
THE END

Its hard to tell the promoter that the sanctioning fee is unchanged when the sled count drops...other options have to be explored...Xtreme22 is right about one thing for sure...no promoters no races, simple as that.
